Letter: Auditors misreported out-of-hours situation

Dear Editor

Contrary to your report in last week's GP, Eastleigh and Test Valley South PCT and New Forest PCT have always provided out-of-hours GP services.

Since July 2004, both trusts have commissioned the West Hampshire out-of-hours service to provide this cover, in conjunction with Hampshire Ambulance Service.

We are investigating why the National Audit Office (NAO) report states that New Forest PCT and Eastleigh and Test Valley South PCT cannot provide assurance of 'a GP consultation where clinically appropriate' when this is available, and when both PCTs responded to the survey through the West Hampshire out-of-hours service.

Local PCTs involved in the West Hampshire out-of-hours service are disappointed that GP chose to report the outcomes of the NAO survey in such a fashion.

John Richards, chief executive, South West Hampshire Alliance.
