HPV vaccine programme success

Uptake of the HPV vaccine by young women is encouraging, data released by the DoH shows.

Since the start of the vaccination programme over two years ago, 84% of girls aged 13-14 years and over three quarters of girls aged 12-13 have completed the vaccination course.

In 2009 the vaccination of girls aged 14-18 was introduced to the programme. Over 60% of girls aged 12-18 have now been fully vaccinated. This number is expected to rise making the programme one of the most successful in the world, the DoH said.

Public health minister Anne Milton said: 'Being able to help protect young women against this disease is a fantastic development and the uptake is very encouraging. This vaccination reduces the risk of cervical cancer and will save up to 400 deaths every year in the UK.'
