Hewitt supports greater private sector role in PCTs

The private sector may have an increasing role in PCT management after a King's Fund report found managers were hampering practice-based commissioning, according to health secretary Patricia Hewitt.

Speaking at the NHS Alliance spring conference in London last week, Ms Hewitt said the majority of PCTs had yet to agree terms for the transfer of commissioning powers to GPs.

Ms Hewitt added: 'We may have to increasingly look to the private sector because the PCTs are lacking in some areas, particularly in patient data transfer and analysis'.
