Researchers have found that mice infected with either mouse gammaherpesvirus 68 or mouse cytomegaloviruses were resistant to infection from a diverse range of pathogens including Listeria monocytogenes and the plague bacteria Yersina pestis.

More study is needed to look at whether humans can receive similar advantages from herpes simplex virus and other chronic infections, the researchers said.
