The bottom line with any measure undertaken to make practices environmentally friendly is the net reduction in carbon emissions that results.
Switching to a renewable energy provider, for example, is likely to have a much bigger impact than changing to energy-efficient light bulbs.
It is worth raising the issue of transport to and from the practice for staff (and patients), as reducing car use is also likely to have a significant impact on carbon dioxide emissions. Thus car sharing, using public transport and walking or cycling to work are to be encouraged.
The issue of carbon offsetting schemes is not as clear cut as it would seem, and should be considered only once every possible measure has been taken to reduce emissions.
Not all offsetting schemes are the same, and it is worth researching which schemes genuinely are offsetting.
