Greater NHS efficiency could save £2.2 billion

If Trusts learnt from best practice the improvements in productivity and efficiency could save £2.3 billion, according to Health Minister Andy Burham.

More efficient NHS needed
The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement has released ‘Better care, better value’ indicators, which show trust-by-trust performance across a number of key measures. It is hoped that these indicators will assist the NHS in identifying and sharing best practice throughout the health service, helping to improve patient care.

The indicators highlight how reducing the amount of time patients stay in hospital, minimising the level of emergency admissions to hospital and better management of staff sickness and turnover could improve patient care and value for money.

Andy Burham said: ‘Productivity is about working smarter, not harder – and improved efficiency will deliver both better patient care and better value for the taxpayer.’

The indicators are primarily aimed at PCTs and acute hospital providers, but information for other NHS organisations will be part of the next phase of the programme.
