GPs urged to tackle alcohol abuse

GPs across the south east of England are being urged to sign up to the Big Drink Debate to help address alcohol-related health and social issues.

The Big Drink Debate was set up to tackle alcohol-related issues in the south east of England

The manifesto highlights the need to make adult drinkers of all ages aware of health risks from drinking above guidelines and from binge drinking.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, regional public health director for NHS South East Coast, which is behind the project, said: ‘During the festive season, the effects of alcohol are at the forefront of many GPs' minds. I call on your readers to register their support for the Big Drink Debate manifesto and to share it with colleagues.

‘This is an important opportunity for GPs to contribute to the development of alcohol priorities for the south east.'

Dr Alison Milroy, clinical governance GP lead for NHS West Kent, said: ‘Measures such as enabling adults of all ages to be more aware of alcohol-related health issues and helping employers develop appropriate and supportive policies are all important ways to address the problems associated with excessive drinking.

‘I will be signing the manifesto, and encourage GP colleagues across the South East to join me.'
