GPs must deliver DoH's priorities or face cuts

GPs face ‘a real drop in income' unless they deliver government priorities in the future. The news comes in a letter from health minister Andy Burnham which spells out in the clearest possible terms that GPs must deliver ministerial policy or face a pay cut.

Rather than concentrate on clinical needs or patient care, Mr Burnham says that GPs' profits will fall unless they do what the government wants.

In a letter to Philip Hollobone, Conservative MP for Kettering, Mr Burnham said that GPs should invest more in their practices and would only maintain profit levels if they helped to meet the government's aims.

The news comes in the wake of the DoH's announcement last week that GPs would receive no pay rise for 2007/8.
