GPC: extended hours DES 'unsafe'

The extended hours directed enhanced service (DES) will be unsafe for GPs working on their own at night, according to a letter to all UK GPs from the GPC.

GPC chairman Dr Laurence Buckman has sent the letter explaining the GPC's recent guidance on the government's offer.

The letter clarifies the known details of both the offer and the imposition and calls for all GPs to respond to the upcoming poll of opinion. The poll will be sent out on the 18 February, concluding on 29 February.

Dr Buckman warned that the proposed extended hours DES will be unsafe for GPs working on their own at night and that the service it offered would not match that in normal practice hours.

The letter also mentions the GPC's long-term strategy to prevent more funding going towards private companies and protect general practice.

The GPC announced last week that it believed accepting the government's offer was preferable to the imposition.
