GP care a third of A&E costs

A GP consultation is less than a third the price of a trip to A&E, BMA figures show.

Speaking at the King's Fund last week, GPC spokesman Dr Nigel Watson said that consultations with GPs cost the NHS an average of £20.

In contrast, a visit to a walk-in centre costs £24, and a trip to A&E costs £75.

Dr Watson told GP the fig- ures supported DoH plans to move care out of hosptials and into the community.

But he warned that the policy was being held back bythe lack of secure funding.

'If you're going to do things in the community, you need to employ doctors and nurses on long-term contracts,' he said.
