FTN comments on expansion of Foundation trust sector
Sue Slipman, Foundation Trust Network Director said:
"In their first three years, foundation trusts have demonstrated they are a vital part of the new NHS.
"Set free from central performance management, foundation trusts have moved away from the traditional NHS focus upwards to Whitehall to a focus outwards to local communities - using their new relationship with governors and members to make services more responsive to patients' needs.
"Becoming autonomous organisations responsible for their own destiny has strengthened the governance of foundation trusts. And Monitor's robust regulatory framework has raised standards of financial management across the sector.
"The successful completion of Heart of England's acquisition of Good Hope Hospital is a major achievement and marks another important milestone. We hope this is not just a one-off, but an option that can now be explored in other parts of the country where patients and local communities believe this is the best way forward for their local services."
