Flu tracker: Latest on GP consultation rates across the UK

The graph below shows consultation rates per 100,000 patients in each of the four UK nations - revealing a spike in consultation rates at the start of 2019.

Flu rates across the UK are measured according to the European moving epidemic method (MEM). The point at which consultation rates are considered beyond baseline threshold levels, and then at higher levels of intensity varies between UK countries (see table below for details). These variations exist because of different methods of data collection and levels of flu recorded in previous years in each nation.

The heatmap below shows the current intensity level of consultations for flu-like illness each UK nation is currently experiencing.

Consultation rates for flu-like illness vary between regions of England - but all areas have seen a similar pattern of rising consultation rates in early 2019.
