My favourite website…

Martin Lewis is the journalist who crops up on the TV and BBC Radio 2 with advice on how to save money.

His website is all about saving money and I am sure I have saved hundreds of pounds over the past few years without going to any great trouble.

The site gives guides on how to save on car insurance, airline tickets, credit cards, utilities suppliers and much more.

We used the telephone calls abroad section when my son was on gap year in Israel last year. Select the country and it gives you a list of suppliers, mostly using 0844 numbers, where no prepayment or registration is required. We called him for 0.5p per minute to a landline and 3p per minute to a mobile and ended up speaking to him more often and cheaper than we did when he was in the UK.

I also like the search engine for finding cheap flights with low cost airlines such as Ryanair, BMI and so on. You can even just put in a price and a date and see where you can go for that amount.

There are loads of tips and advice on how to negotiate a lower deal for your mobile phone, how to use interest free credit cards to make some cash by becoming a ‘rate tart’ — it’s not as rude as it sounds — but the banks won’t like you.

Register and you will get a weekly email with new bargains and tips. You do have to be quick off the mark because the email is so popular that bargains tend to sell out quickly.

If you want to save money, this is the place to go.
