Extended hours for the BackCare telephone Helpline

From Monday 2/4/07 the BackCare telephone Helpline will be open for 11 sessions with 5 new volunteers bringing the total number up to 20. There will be two new shifts Monday afternoon from 1 to 4 pm and Tuesday evening from 7.30 to 9.30 pm.

From Monday 2/4/07 the BackCare telephone Helpline will be open for 11 sessions with 5 new volunteers bringing the total number up to 20. There will be two new shifts Monday afternoon from 1 to 4 pm and Tuesday evening from 7.30 to 9.30 pm.

The Helpline was launched on January 2000 and provides an invaluable service for people living with back pain, their families, employers and health professionals. It offers impartial information, advice and support, and is able to draw upon BackCare's unique store of information and knowledge about back pain and care.

Over the last year Helpline volunteers have supported, on average 325 callers per month and the extended opening times should provide for a further 150 calls.

The Helpline is regularly audited and the latest figures show a 94% high value rating.

New volunteer Cathy Russell who has just completed her training and is looking forward to her first call said:

"as an ex nurse and long standing member of BackCare I have a good understanding of the issues surrounding back pain, I feel that volunteering for the Helpline will put my experience to good use and now that I am retired I want to give something back to society"
