Guidelines

There are a number of up-to-date guidelines on the management of patients with CKD. These provide information on best practice along with a comprehensive review of the published literature which formed the basis for their recommendations.

  • NICE. National Clinical guideline for early identification and management of chronic kidney disease in adults in primary and secondary care. 2008. Pages 20-21 of this guideline provide easy to follow algorithms for the identification, diagnosis and referral of patients with CKD. www.nice.org.uk/CG73
  • Other NICE guidelines to refer to include:

- Type-1 diabetes - www.nice.org.uk/CG15

- Type-2 diabetes - www.nice.org.uk/CG87

- Hypertension - www.nice.org.uk/CG34

Key texts

  • Based on the Oxford Textbook of Clinical Nephrology, there is the more concise Oxford Handbook of Nephrology and Hypertension. Steddon S, Ashman N, Chesser A, et al. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2006.

This provides clear information and practical advice on the day-to-day management of patients with CKD and other aspects of renal disease.
