Dr John Cormack, a GP at Greenwood Surgery in Essex, has set up the website scam-scum.co.uk in the hope of fighting back against the various short-lived companies that operate in his area.
Practices have been stung with bills of over £20,000 after being told they must upgrade their phone systems in order for them to work when local lines ‘go digital’.
The salesmen claim to be calling on behalf of BT and initially say the upgrade will be free. They have also targeted schools, dental surgeries and homes for the elderly, according to Dr Cormack.
Dr Cormack says the upgrades are sold by a company called BC Telecoms, which has since been liquidated and reappeared under different names such as BTS Digital and Business Telecom. Attempts by Healthcare Republic to contact these firms have been unsuccessful.
Victims have been pursued by larger companies who then take on the debt or lease for the equipment, said Dr Cormack.
Last year many GPs were tricked into signing up to fake directory listings before being charged thousands of pounds by untraceable companies.
Certain practice insurance schemes may not provide cover for such scams, warned Dr Cormack.
