‘Dramatic rise in indemnity costs' forecasts MDU

Subscriptions to GP indemnifiers are to soar because of increased patient pay-outs and a legislative change that allows the NHS to claim from insurers where negligence is proven, according to the MDU.

The MDU, the UK's largest GP indemnifier, warned that increases in the cost of claims exceeded inflation during the last 30 years.

An MDU spokeswoman said they take changes into account in their ‘actuarial forecasts to minimise dramatic short-term effect. In the longer term, they are bound to affect the cost of subscriptions.' MDU rates increased by 10 per cent last year.
