Last week Lord Darzi cited his return to surgery and academic work as the reason behind his decision to resign as a government minister when parliament went into summer recess yesterday.

Lord Darzi said last week he was 'deeply grateful' to Gordon Brown for giving him the privilege of serving as a government minister and allowing him the freedom to make 'tough and important decisions'.

Lord Darzi will retain a role as a government advisor.

Yesterday a DoH spokesman was unable to confirm who would replace Lord Darzi, when and what their portfolio of responsibilities would be.
