In answer to a parliamentary question, health minister Ann Keen said that the DoH had put aside £150 million in 2009/10 and £400 million the following year to cover the new policy commitments.

‘We are confident all the commitments are affordable within this overall total, though precise funding for individual initiatives is still subject to further detailed planning work,' she added.

The money will be use to implement policies including faster drug approvals and a new health innovation fund.

The same funding would be enough to pay for more than 1,800 extra GPs over the same period.
