Darzi is 'friend of nurses' says the RCN

Health minister Lord Ara Darzi is 'a friend of nurses' because he was the first to employ a nurse endoscopist, according to the Royal College of Nurses chief executive and general secretary Peter Carter.

Speaking at the Nurse Practitioner Association conference in Liverpool on Friday, he said: ‘It depresses me when I go around and meet many nurses who don’t think Darzi is a friend of nursing.

‘He is very pro-nursing and in the early 1990s he trained the first ever nurse endoscopist despite great hostility from his colleagues. People saw this as treachery but Darzi was not put off.

‘Now you see nurses operating in that area as a well accepted practice.’
