The GPC has warned that patient care will suffer as GPs have to take time off in order to complete the registration process, which could start as early as October. It has produced a 104-page guidance document aimed at helping GPs through the process.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has proposed changes for GP registration.
GPC chairman Dr Laurence Buckman said he is ‘seriously concerned’ about the ‘substantial workloads’ GPs will have in order to the complete the CQC registration process.
He said: ‘This will be a huge administrative burden and will end up taking GPs away from seeing patients.
‘The self-assessment form is too complicated and the nature of the questions mean that GPs are likely to feel like they are taking part in a creative writing exercise, which is not the correct way to demonstrate compliance.’
Dr Buckman added that asking GPs to foot the bill for the registration process is effectively a pay cut for GPs. The costs should be met by the Treasury instead, he said.
But the CQC said it did not expect most practice will have to start gathering much new information.
A spokesman said: ‘Most practices will already have good information and governance systems in place and will be able to use this existing information to demonstrate compliance.
‘It is worth noting that the focus of our approach is on the outcomes that people who use services receive, this is an area where providers may need to think a bit more about the evidence they have.’
