Nottingham GP Professor Sparrow, the RCGP medical director for revalidation, takes on the role less than a month after GP registration with the CQC took effect.

The vast majority of practices have now registered with the CQC, with applications for registration from eight practices initially rejected.

Professor Sparrow said: 'The commission has a vital role to play in improving and maintaining the quality of health and social care across all healthcare sectors including general practice. I look forward to using my experience in the profession to further facilitate the work that the CQC has been doing with general practice.'
