Concern as foundation trusts excluded from discharge targets

The NHS Alliance has criticised the exclusion of foundation trusts from targets for prompt patient discharge information to be supplied to GPs.

The NHS Operating Framework requires the information to be with GPs within 72 hours of discharge initially and within 24 hours by April 2010.

However, the bulk of foundation trusts operate to three-year contracts which currently do not include the requirement.

Dr Michael Dixon, the NHS Alliance chairman, said: ‘It is unacceptable, and potentially dangerous, to fail to ensure that all patients receive the same standards of care.

‘It is impossible for GPs to treat patients properly when they do not know the results of diagnostic tests.’
