The Maryport GP, who won a glass award and a certificate, was nominated by one of his patients who cited him as going above and beyond the call of duty as a GP.

The charity says the GP has brought the health service and coeliac patients in his area closer together and has a great understanding of the physical and psychological impacts of the illness.

Dr Chaudhri said: ‘I feel very honoured to receive this award and, although I have a distinct advantage as I myself have coeliac disease, which has forced me to have an interest, I am also very aware of the subtleties around living with the condition and am keen to raise awareness amongst my medical colleagues and also in a wider community.'

Dr Chaudhri received his award from Neil Crawford, marketing director for award sponsors Gluten Free Foods.
