Classical CD of the month

For Denmark's national composer, Carl Nielsen's international reputation is still not all that it might be. It is hard to understand why, especially on this evidence. Thomas Dausgaard and his Danish National Symphony Orchestra fill this music with energy and passion.

Our critic David Fanning was left ecstatic by this CD saying: ‘This is outstanding and unmissable for Nielsen collectors. The Danish Radio Symphony must have played the Saul and David and Maskerade excerpts and the Helios Overture more times than they can count. But for Dausgaard they relish every detail, without ever sounding self conscious.’

So much affinity for the composer is evident in this recording that it is infectious. The overture to Maskerade opens like an invitation to the dance, while works like the soulful prelude to Act III of Willemoes are filled with a quiet, searching quality.

Similarly, Cupid and the Poet is marked with the instruction allegretto con brio and there is plenty of brio in the Danes’ interpretation.

David Fanning suggests this may end up as his recording of the year. It’s that sort of a recording — an absolute triumph.
