Surgeries are also to open in branches of Sainsbury's and Asda. Virgin has expressed an interest in housing GP surgeries.
Dr Mark Nelms and his partners at the Carlisle House Surgery in Poole, Dorset, opened their first branch premises in a vacated dental suite in Boots in January.
Talks are now under way at other sites between the pharmacy chain and primary care organisations (PCOs) in England and Wales. Boots has ‘potentially 200 locations where we would have space we could offer to PCOs', a company spokesman said.
Asda expects to open its first in-store GP pilot site this year. If successful, the service will be extended to stores with pharmacies in under-doctored areas. The company plans to have 180 pharmacies by the end of 2007.
