Dr Prit Buttar, chairman of the GPC communications group and a GP in Abingdon in Oxfordshire, said he knew ‘anecdotally’ that doctors were blaming the association’s PR failure for their decision to leave.
A ‘strident and angry’ minority of doctors have said they were resigning their membership on profession-only email groups such as doctors.net, he admitted.
‘We did lose the battle over enhanced services and it would be understandable if they were angry,’ Dr Buttar said. ‘But our successes over pensions don’t make such good headlines.’
The PR fightback will launch within weeks, directly targeting practices and involving patients.
The campaign will focus initially on GPs, but could eventually include other doctors.
A spokesman for the BMA said that more GPs are joining the association.
