Blood test could aid in diagnosis of glandular fever

A patient's white blood cell (WBC) count could help to distinguish between glandular fever and tonsillitis, say UK researchers.

The findings come from a study of 120 patients with glandular fever and 100 with tonsillitis. Blood tests showed total WBC count was higher in the tonsillitis patients, but lymphocyte count was higher in the glandular fever group.

A ratio of lymphocyte to total WBC count higher then 0.35 correctly diagnosed glandular fever 90 per cent of the time.
