The Big Drop-in!

Quit Smoking for Free with Fresh Start

Quit Smoking for Free with Fresh Start

Fresh Start, Derby’s free NHS stop smoking service, is holding special drop-in sessions at Derby Central Library to help people to stop smoking.

Smokers can come along to the Central Library (entrance via The Strand) on any of the following dates to register for a free, eight-week course.

Registration dates:   Time:
Saturday 23rd June   10am – 1pm
Saturday 30th June   10am – 1pm
Saturday 7th July   10am – 1pm
Saturday 14th July   10am – 1pm

Smokers will be able to have their carbon monoxide levels monitored and receive advice and support to help them give up smoking.  Patients will also receive a prescription for Nicotine Replacement Therapy (at the cost of a prescription if applicable).

Su Benton, Fresh Start Team Leader for Derby City Primary Care Trust says: “Many people across Derby will have vowed to stop smoking to fit in with the public smoking ban on 1st July.  Stopping smoking is the single best thing a smoker can do to improve their health and these sessions are another way people can access the help they need to succeed.

“We know that giving up smoking isn’t easy but by accessing the Fresh Start programme people do not have to do it alone. We provide friendly and expert support and with our help people are up to four times more likely to give up for good.”

With the introduction of the smoke-free laws it is expected that many more people will want to stop smoking.  From Sunday 1st July 2007, virtually all workplaces and substantially enclosed public areas in England will become smoke-free.

The introduction of this law will protect everyone from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke when they are working, socialising and relaxing, and will help those that want to quit smoking by creating more supportive environments. Three quarters of the people who smoke want to give up and we expect that the smoking ban will encourage many people to do so.

For those who cannot attend the sessions at the Central Library there are many other ways to get help to quit. People can contact their own GP Practice or one of the local pharmacies involved in the scheme. They can also contact Fresh Start on 01332 208077 or visit for details of sessions in their area.

The Fresh Start programme offers a choice of group or one-to-one sessions where advisers offer the appropriate support depending on an individual’s needs. The weekly sessions alongside Nicotine Replacement Therapy, such as patches and gum, really can make a big difference. Zyban (a course of tablets to help reduce cravings and other symptoms) can also be used where medically suitable and is available on prescription from GPs.
