The benefits of folic acid

Folic acid might reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke by lowering homocysteine levels, say UK experts.

Meta-analyses of 16 cohort studies and 80 genetic studies indicated that lowering homocysteine levels had a protective effect. Seven randomised trials into folic acid supplementation were too small to be conclusive, but their results were consistent with a protective effect (BMJ 2006; 33: 1,114-7).
