Bank holiday call to celebrate NHS

The prime minister should declare a new bank holiday to mark the 60th birthday of the NHS on 5 July, according to a GP who is also a Labour MP.

Backed by think tank the Fabian Society, Dartford MP Dr Howard Stoate said: 'The creation of a national health service free at the point of use, based on clinical need, not ability to pay, is one of our defining achievements as a nation.

'Few other institutions have done as much to tackle inequality and disadvantage and I think that it is right to set aside a day on which to remind ourselves of this achievement and to celebrate the efforts of those who work within it,' he said.

In 2006 Gordon Brown told the think tank that he backed giving the country a new public holiday.
