Asda to open two in-store surgeries

Asda is to become the second supermarket to host GP surgeries within its stores.

The company will run two pilot schemes at stores at Hounslow, west London, and Boston, Lincolnshire. GPs will offer appointments at the stores on Saturday mornings and some evenings.

An Asda spokesman said the plan had been under discussion for about a year. ‘It will be up and running later this year, but we don't know exactly when,' he said.

The company now plans to discuss the plan with GPs in both areas.

The news follows the announcement last week that a GP-led company is to launch extended hours services at a branch of Sainsbury's in Heaton Park, Greater Manchester.

But Britain's largest supermarket company says it has no plans to follow suit.

A spokeswoman for Tescos said: ‘GPs in stores are not something we're looking at.'
