A total of 270 new pharmacies opened in England and Wales in 2006/7 and 55 closed, according to the DoH.
The number of prescription items dispensed by the 10,839 community pharmacies in both countries in 2006/7 increased by 31.4 million to 745 million.
A total of 579,965 medicine-use-reviews were conducted and 22,416 local enhanced services were provided by community pharmacists within the period.
The report was compiled for the DoH by the Information Centre.
