Speaking to GPonline from the picket line outside the Royal London Hospital in east London, Tower Hamlets LMC chair and BMA council member Dr Jackie Applebee warned that if junior doctors quit the NHS, general practice will not survive.

Dr Applebee warned that 'junior doctors' fight is our fight', and said it was vital for GPs to get behind junior doctor colleagues as they stand up to the government over contract changes.

Writing for GPonline last week, Dr Applebee set out measures GPs and practices can take to support junior doctors.

Thousands of GP trainees are expected to be among junior doctors taking part in strikes in what is the first industrial action by this group of clinicians for 40 years.

GP leaders have said that despite general practice trainees taking part in the strikes, GP services will not be significantly affected by the industrial action.
