In the early 20th century, healthcare was basic, risky and often a luxury only the rich could afford.

Using archive footage and personal accounts, two films from the BBC's Timeshift series, narrated by Robert Winston, look at health before the NHS.

The first film looks at how 'ordinary people, GPs, midwives and councils coped with a chaotic and ramshackle system'. The second documents the evolution of hospitals (BBC4, 24 September and 1 October).
