Unions representing over 4m workers released a joint statement through campaign group The NHS Support Federation saying the reforms will ‘break-up NHS services’.

The federation’s director, Paul Evans, said the ‘extreme measures’ set out in the White Paper ‘were not mentioned in either the Conservative or Lib Dem manifestos. The public are not being given the chance to say no and don’t realise how far the reforms will go.’

The campaigners say further exploration of the market will waste vital NHS funds and the reorganisation will cost up to £3bn.

Former health secretary Andy Burnham is also launching a campaign to protect the NHS from the reforms and union Unison is launching a legal challenge.

Unions backing the campaign include Unison, Unite and general union GMB.
