Dr Pall said she was 'trying to create an Indian version of UK general practice'.

'It is a British general practice model,' she told GP. 'It is cost effective, and gives "a bigger bang for the buck".'

The centre aims to help patients avoid expensive hospital appointments. Patients pay to use the centre, which is run by a social business set up by Dr Pall.

The centre is linked with a local university to help improve training of the nurses working there.

Following the initial success of the centre, regional governments in India are now looking at developing centres with similar public-private partnership funding models, Dr Pall said.
