Time to make a difference to the 'age of your arteries'

AstraZeneca, H.E.A.R.T UK and the British Cardiac Patient Association have joined together to educate the nation about atherosclerosis and to ask the public to make a pledge to ‘improve the age of their arteries’. The ‘Age of Your Arteries’, a national campaign to turn back the clock on heart and circulation disease, was launched today to healthcare professionals at the annual British Cardiac Society (BCS) Meeting in Glasgow.

The ‘Age of Your Arteries' campaign touched down with the first voyage of the Atheropod at the BCS. The ‘Age of Your Arteries' Atheropod is a multi-media simulator ride that takes people on an educational journey through the arteries to ‘hunt down the UK's number one killer'. The educational ride shows how cardiovascular risk factors can lead to atherosclerosis, plaque build up & rupture and ultimately a heart attack or stroke.

The campaign will be launched to the public at the end of June 2007 with the Atheropod visiting major cities throughout the UK.

Eve Knight, Head of Service Development, The British Cardiac Patient Association urges "Heart Disease remains the number one killer in the UK. With obesity, diabetes and other cardiovascular risk factors on the rise in the UK this really is ‘The Age of our Arteries', now is the time for us all to join together and make a difference to the nation's health."

Dr Hilary Jones, General Practitioner and the voice of the simulator ride comments, "As healthcare professionals we're all aware of the implications of atherosclerosis and the devastating impact that the consequences can have. I believe we need to lead by example, turning back the clock on 'The Age of Our Arteries' by making lifestyle changes, no matter how small. I will be making a pledge to join my 15 year old son on every 10k charity run he does this year - and that's usually one a month! I will be asking my family, friends and patients to make their own pledges as well."

Through the public facing campaign, members of the public will be encouraged to make a pledge to better their arterial health at the www.ageofyourarteries.co.uk website.
