The third DVD in the Effective Consulting series uses challenging patient consultations to help GPs map and improve their consulting style.
GP communications expert Dr Peter Tate presents six scenarios performed by professional actors and reveals how the doctor’s consulting style affects the outcome.
Dr Tate demonstrates how GPs can use his mapping technique to analyse their own consultations and identify areas for improvement.
The process is fully explained in the 12-page booklet accompanying the DVD, which also includes key articles on consulting skills, managing angry patients, and briefs for role plays.
The Effective Consulting series is ideal for young doctors preparing for the RCGP Clinical Skills Assessment, or GPs at any stage of their careers seeking to enhance their consulting skills for CPD or revalidation. The format is also highly suitable for group learning.
Dr Peter Tate was an MRCGP examiner from 1981 and responsible for the introduction of the video consultation module in 1996. He was convenor of the panel of examiners from 2002 to 2006. He is the author of The Doctor’s Communication Handbook, now in its sixth edition, and co-author of The Consultation and The New Consultation, published by Oxford University Press.
