Swine flu pandemic 'imminent'

A swine flu pandemic is now 'imminent', as the WHO raises the alert level to phase 5 indicating that there has been human-to-human transmission in at least two countries.

The raising of the alert comes after a 23-month-old Mexican child died while on a visit in Texas. This is the first death from swine flu outside Mexico, where the outbreak originated.

The CMO Sir Liam Donaldson said today that he was ‘concerned but not alarmed’ following the move to phase 5, the second highest level.

He said that the UK would see ‘many more cases’ of swine flu but most people would make a good recovery.
In Scotland, a dedicated swine flu advice line will go live this afternoon.

The line will be accessed through NHS24, and will give the public valuable information about swine flu and what to do if they have any concerns.
