Stop Smoking for Ramadan

Ramadan begins on this month and fasting Muslims will not be allowed to smoke during daylight hours.

Derby City PCT’s Fresh Start stop smoking service is giving smokers the chance to give up for good at this opportune time.

he Fresh Start programme offers a choice of group, one-to-one or telephone sessions where advisers offer the appropriate support depending on an individual’s needs. The weekly sessions along with Nicotine Replacement Therapy, such as patches and gum, really can make a big difference. Zyban and champix (a course of tablets to help reduce cravings and other symptoms) can also be used where medically suitable and is available on prescription from GPs.
Smokers who want to quit for Ramadan can ring Fresh Start free telephone line on 0800 707 6870 to speak to an advisor.

Su Benton, Fresh Start Team Leader for Derby City Primary Care Trust says: “Stopping smoking is the single best thing a smoker can do to improve their health and Ramadan’s daylight smoking ban is a great opportunity for members of the Muslim community to quit.
“We know that giving up smoking isn’t easy but by accessing the Fresh Start programme people do not have to do it alone. We provide friendly and expert support and with our help people are up to four times more likely to give up for good.”
