Research brief: Exercise reduces CHD risk even in obese

The beneficial effect of physical exercise on CHD risk is independent of BMI, according to a large US study. Almost 90,000 women aged between 34 and 59 were followed between 1980 and 2000. Both being obese and doing less than an hour of exercise a week were found to increase CHD risk, but the effects were independent.

The researchers concluded that the results underscore the importance of maintaining both a healthy diet and keeping physically active (Circulation 2006; 113: 499-506).
