Pharmacists may be funded solely by PCTs

The DoH has announced proposals to change legislation governing pharmacy funding.

Currently over half is provided from nationally-held funds as a global sum and the rest is from PCTs. The proposals in a consultation paper launched by health minister Dawn Primarolo would permit transfer of the nationally-held funds to PCTs.

Sue Sharpe, chief executive of the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee, said: ‘A single source of funding could support a more simple system of fees and allowances, which are currently made complex by the need to split payments between the two funding sources.’
