The petition, hosted on the 10 Downing Street website, calls on the government to ‘concentrate resources on local core services and not waste resources on costly headline grabbing proposals like extended hours'. At time of writing 2,172 people have signed.

By contrast, a petition calling on prime minister Gordon Brown to increase GPs' hours has found just five signatories - two of which rebuke the petitioner.

One argues that ‘my employers work extremely hard' and demands that he ‘stop criticising ALL GPs'.

The deadline to sign the first petition is 10 April.
