PCTs back down over refusal to pay locum cover

Two PCTs have backed down from refusing to pay locum costs for GPs who are on maternity, sickness, paternity or adoption leave after taking legal advice.

Blackwater Valley and Hart and North East Hampshire PCTs considered cutting the payments from April to ease deficits. But the GMS contract obliges PCTs to contribute to the cost of locum cover for GPs on leave up to a maximum of £978.91 per week, although how much they pay is discretionary.

The PCTs have now set up a professional executive committee sub-group to assess claims.
