Patient safety tool

GP practices can evaluate the strength of their patient safety arrangements with a tool launched by the National Patient Safety Association (NPSA). The tool, called the Manchester Patient Safety Framework, sets out five levels of patient safety to which organisations can aspire, relating to how incidents are investigated, staff education and risk management training. NPSA safety specialist Jane Carthey said: 'The tool provides NHS staff with a framework to discuss their perceptions of how mature their patient safety culture is. It allows front line staff to better understand the theory behind it.' See www.npsa.nhs.uk for details.
