Opportunities for women doctors welcomed by CMO

Progress is being made in ensuring better opportunities for women doctors, claims Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for England Sir Liam Donaldson.

In his latest annual report, he says a working group to address these issues is already being put together, with recommendations expected in early 2009.

Last year, Sir Liam called for better opportunities for women doctors in their career, after studies showed many females regretted the move because of barriers to career progression.

The national working group is expected to look at expanding the number of flexible working places for women. It meets in September. It may also recommend mentor schemes for subjects such as surgery, which typically have low uptake among women.
