The ‘innovation challenge’ prizes will challenge staff to tackle issues facing the population including child obesity, Alzheimers and COPD.

A shortlist of issue sthe challenge prize will target will be drawn up by an expert panel. Members of the public will then be consulted on the final list of prizes which will be announced later this year.

The prizes were announced by Lord Darzi this week alongside details of how £220m of funding revealed in the next stage review will be used to encourage innovation.

GP practices will be eligible to apply for a share of this money which will be divided equally among SHAs.

‘NHS staff have told me that accessing the money and support to turn ideas into reality can be a struggle and many great ideas never get realised. That is why I am delighted to be able to announce that we are making a £220m innovation fund available to get those ideas off the bench and to the patient’s bedside, day centre or GP surgery.’
