Tax crackdown
By Jenny Stone, 14 April 2010
As a self-employed GP I understand the importance of properly managing my tax and declaring income. It appears, however, that HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is sharpening its knives for doctors, given the amnesty period for disclosing previously undeclared earnings, which ran out on 31 March 2010. While not personally worried, I was chatting to some GP regstrars who still have quite high earnings from cremation fees. I told them about the disclosure period's deadline but the consensus was that HMRC was unlikely to spot them so they would not declare this income. What are your thoughts? Has HMRC made any specific comments about investigating trainee GPs or are they more likely to target established GPs?
