Make Mother's Day extra special

A well-considered present of wine could garner favours throughout the year, suggests Alan Johnson.

Most women adore sparkling wine or a good bottle of champagne. With this in mind, Mothers' Day is on 26 March - an occasion when rose may suit.

Gosset, one of the oldest champagne houses with an illustrious reputation, makes a charming pink champagne (£34.50). If your budget doesn't stretch, Juve Y Camps' Cava (£8.95) is endorsed by the king of Spain himself.

A good bottle of dry sherry is also a safe bet. Lustau's Puerto Fino (£9.95) makes a wonderful aperitif served with ice before dinner.

At the other end of the taste scale, a luscious dessert wine will have your mum doing your ironing/babysitting indefinitely. Go for Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, Domaine des Bernardins 2003 (£14.50).

Bourgogne Blanc, Alex Gambal (£13.00) is ideal for a Sunday lunch. Mr Gambal's wines are becoming recognised the world over. For a red wine, the Chilean Estampa Gold Assemblage Reserve, Vina Estampa 2002 (£9.60) is a full-bodied wine of character.

Our wines start at £3.99, so browse our website or give us a call. Our knowledgeable staff will be happy to help you make your selection.
